Where do I begin on this day of emotional ups and downs? Well let's start at 9 PM the time of my bedtime before the grand event because, if we fast forward only a few very short hours, I woke up at 3AM. I piled on the many many many layers so that I could successfully brave 7 hours in the cold! My floor mates and I had a quick breakfast of oatmeal and headed out on our walk down to the Mall. We were all super syked to see the inauguration and it was really strange to see the DC streets abandoned.. at least for the time being. We finally got to the monuments and strolled down towards the capital only to realize that we definitely weren't the only people to arrive at 4:30 AM.

So we finally got to the crowds and we decided that we wanted to get the closest to the front that we could possibly manage. All I have to say is: BAD IDEA! So somehow we got caught in the masses and could not get out! We were like claustrophobic to the max and decided that we couldn't stand with your arms pushed against our body for five hours. So somehow we convinced people that we were going to the bathroom and not trying to butt ahead of them and with linked arms snaked our way through the crowd. Then the reality hit of how cold it was. We were no longer closed in from the wind by thousands of people and we all immediately froze. Sophie and Skye went to go get something hot to drink for all of us and Mridula, Ianthe and I sat down to save some spots for us on the side. Unfortunately my native Trinidadian friend Ianthe was sick and could not stand to be in the cold any longer so she headed in the cold back to the Hilltop and warmth, while the rest of us tried to survive the miserable cold.

Me and Mrids trying to stay warm....

This was an angel in a tree tossing hand warmers into the mob of freezing people. I thought he was going to start a riot for warmth.

So as we were waiting Skye comes back from the refreshment line and tells us that it is our turn to wait in this never ending line... that was more like a mob where people kept cutting. So I went over and stayed in line and finally, after 3 hours of waiting, got our prized muffins, french fries, and hot chocolate! Oh it might not sound good now but trust me by 11 AM in the bitter cold when you have woken up at 3AM it is heaven.

So by the time the refreshments were gone the festivities had started! So we scooted over to where we could see the jumbo-trons and all of the events. What struck me the most is the variety of social classes and ages that were at the inauguration celebrating Barack Obama. There were young hugging old and the poor crying with the rich... it was awe inspiring! So I have many pictures and here they go:

So this guy had a sweet slash cheesy beanie!

Rick Warren!!

Skye and I! Roomies next year!

So I told Sophie to make a face of how she felt at that moment and that was her face! um i think she is cold!

So the frozen Potomac, the frozen reflection pool, and the frozen fountain at the water front..

So the inauguration was amazing and all of the miserable waiting in the cold was definitely worth it in the end. So immediately after Obama's speech the masses were on the move so in effort to walk back to school in a timely manner we made with the crowd and left. Only to get stopped like a few yards later.... by a huge traffic jam! So we got split up because it is not so easy to try and sift through 2 million people with a group of four. Me and Mrids got in a jam that took us 45 minutes to get probably 25 yards. ya it was fun! So here are the pictures of the crowds:

The aftermath of the event!
